The Different Types of Metal Finishing Blasting

Metal finishing blasting help to extend equipment life. The following discusses the various applications.

Sandblasting propels silica or quartz as the abrasive material onto surfaces at high speed. The sharpness of the abrasive and the consistency in size provides a uniform finish. It is especially effective in removing rust from metal.

Bead blasting uses spherical glass beads to clean, deburr, and peen metal surfaces, creating a micro-dimple. Fine glass beads create a dull or satin finish, while coarser beads produce to give a uniform but rough finish.

Wet blasting helps control the amount of dust that is a result of air blasting. Water is injected into the nozzle or mixed with the abrasive to produce a mixture of air, water, and abrasive particles that hit the surface at high pressure to help clean it.

Vacuum blasting, or dustless blasting, is a blasting machine equipped with a vacuum to remove propelled abrasives and surface contaminants. This application results in less cleanup, and the spent abrasives can be recycled, increasing cost-efficiency.

Centrifugal blasting is also known as wheel blasting and has a motor-operated blade wheel that propels the abrasives at high speeds onto the surface. This method produces cleaner and more uniform surfaces.

Soda blasting uses sodium bicarbonate as the abrasive and effectively removes specific contaminants from surfaces. It requires much less pressure, making it suitable for softer surfaces such as chrome, plastic, or glass.

Steel Grit blasting uses spherical steel to clean surfaces and is highly effective in removing paint or rust on steel surfaces. It improves peening which strengthens the metal and the smoothness of the finish.

Bristle blasting does not use an abrasive to clean surfaces. Instead, steel wire bristles rotate against the material’s surface to remove contaminants, resulting in a smooth and uniform finish. It’s very effective in cleaning metal surfaces with heavy corrosion.
