Because of the difficulties of the past year’s worldwide lockdown, there is now in place what is known as a “circular mindset.” Current economic conditions and concerns about the environment have brought this mindset to the forefront. A circular mindset addresses waste and pollution while keeping products and materials in use. Typically, when products or equipment come to the end of their service life, they undergo a remanufacturing process that restores them to a “like-new” condition. Remanufacturing is also known as rebuilding, refurbishing, reconditioning, and renovating.

How safe are these newly reconditioned products?

Global circular opportunities are estimated to result in more than $700 billion on material savings. Economies of all sizes, including local economies, will rely increasingly on financial incentives and consumer demands. To keep items productive longer and new regulatory measures finding their way into the mix.

Standards and regulations

The UL Mark on a new piece of manufactured equipment indicates that this product complies with all nationally recognized safety requirements when released from the factory. It is suitable for sale or installation per all its applicable model codes. But what about reconditioned or rebuilt products? The UL Mark cannot confirm that these products comply with appropriate safety requirements without additional investigation.

To ensure the approval and safe use of reconditioned equipment, a revision to Section 110.21(A)(2) of the 2020 NEC® now mandates that reconditioned be identified as “reconditioned” and the original listing mark removed. The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has developed guidance for their own reconditioned equipment in the electrical industry. The NEMA Policy contains important information on all industry positions related to the suitability and safety of reconditioned equipment NEC 2020.
